Are you studying at the University of Montreal and want to improve your written French? The École de français offers a wide range of workshops on various aspects of the French language. These free online workshops are open to the entire Université de Montréal community, including students.
If you are a non-French speaker, you must have an intermediate to advanced level of French.

Grammar Review I – September 26, 2024
This workshop reviews the components of basic sentence components.
- Variable and invariable word classes
- Groups of words and their functions.
It is aimed at people who have basic knowledge of modern French grammar.

Text Correction Using Word and Antidote – September 30, 2024
While some linguistic errors are easy to spot, others require sharper tools. Thanks to this workshop, you will learn how to take advantage of Word and Antidote software to produce polished texts. You will know how to write and revise your texts by properly by using proofreaders, dictionaries and the various Word and Antidote guides. You will also know how to use your knowledge and judgment to accept or refuse the proposed corrections in the French language.
NOTE: You must have access to Word and Antidote to participate in this workshop.

This workshop reviews complex sentences, as well as sentence types and forms.

Learn How to Construct Relative Clauses – October 7, 2024
Should we write la personne que je te parle or la personne dont je te parle? The relative clause is often a source of confusion, especially when it comes to choosing relative pronouns. This workshop will help you properly construct relative clauses and choose the appropriate relative pronoun for the context of the sentence.

Using the Right Determiner – October 21, 2024
This workshop will introduce you to the different types of determiners and their characteristics, and help you understand the principles governing their agreement in gender and number. Through practical exercises, you'll learn how to choose the right determiner and construct the correct agreement.

Master Difficult Agreements – October 28, 2024
This workshop offers a review of the rules of particular verb/subject agreements.
At the end of this workshop, you will know how to:
- recognize words that give or receive agreements;
- make complex agreements in a noun group;
- agree the verb with its subject (special cases).

Distinguish Homophones – October 29, 2024
This workshop will help you better distinguish homophones that are often a source of errors. Through practical exercises, you will learn to spell them correctly. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to identify the class of homophone words, write and agree them correctly, and choose the correct ending for verbal homophones of -er verbs in the French language.

Demystifying Past Participles – October 30, 2024
Would you like to better understand the rules governing French past participle agreements in a fun and active way? This workshop is for you. Through practical exercises, you will learn to ask yourself the right questions and develop a grammatical analysis method that will be useful to you in other linguistic contexts.

Correcting Your Syntax Errors I – November 5, 2024
Review the structure and functioning of the verb group to avoid syntax errors. By the end of this workshop, you will be able to construct sentences in which the verb group structure is respected, as well as to identify and correct faulty constructions.

Use Prepositions Correctly – November 7, 2024
Do you telephone son collègue or à son collègue? Does the director siège sur or à un comité? Are you still wondering if the preposition in your sentence is proper or if it is required? There are ways to overcome this difficulty. This workshop offers a review of the preposition use in the French language.

Correcting Your Syntax Errors II – November 12, 2024
Review the concepts relating to the types and forms of sentences in order to avoid construction errors. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to correctly construct interrogative, negative and imperative sentences.

Conversation workshops
Are you studying at the Université de Montréal and looking to improve your fluency in oral French? Our conversation workshops are designed for you. Our free online reinforcement workshops will help improve your oral skills through participation in discussions, debates and role plays. These workshops will be facilitated with texts, articles, videos and songs.
Three themes, depending on your language level:
Beginner: Living in Québec (Mondays from 4:30 to 6 pm)
Intermediate: Art, culture and sport (Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 pm)
Advanced: Environment, science and technology (Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 pm)
