Understanding the Quebec university system

University credit: a university credit is a unit that assesses the amount of work required for a course. Generally, one credit represents 45 hours of study, whether in class, an internship or personal work. Successful completion of a university course earns 3 credits.

Credited or non-credited courses: a credited course gives entitlement to units that lead to a degree. A non-credited course provides skills, but doesn’t contribute to earning a degree.

The Québec university system includes 3 study cycles.

Microprogram: short 1st or 2nd cycle training allows you to obtain a certificate of studies.

Certificate: undergraduate degree of 10 courses (30 credits), which can be followed full-time or part-time.

Baccalaureat: university diploma and undergraduate degree of 30 courses (90 up to 120 credits).

DESS: 2nd cycle diploma of 30 credits.

Master’s: university diploma and 2nd cycle degree of 45 credits.

Doctorateuniversity diploma and 3rd cycle degree of 90 credits.

You can register for a 90-credit baccalaureate or obtain one by accumulating 3 certificates of 30 credits each.

The certificates and baccalaureates offered by the FEP are recognized by the ministère de l’Éducation (Ministry of Education) and professional circles.
